Etymology[edit]

From Old Turkic ïrq ("prediction", "fate", "guessing")[1], from Proto-Turkic *ir-

A verbal noun with -(a)q, homogenous to ырым and ырыс. Its derivational base, *ir-, is confirmed by its derivatives, including Turkish dialectal ir-gin ("fate"), ir-ü ("sign"), ("omen"). The verbal root of ырық was identified by B. Y. Vladimirtsov, W. Bang, and A. von Gaben. Vladimirtsov's work in "Notes on Old Turkic and Old Mongolian" highlights the kinship of Turkic *ir- with Mongolian ırı- ~ ırŭ < irıwa < *ırıwa - ırŭwa ("sign"), ("omen"), ("portent"), and also iruu-a, irva ("bad omen"), ("foreboding").
