Etymology

From Proto-Slavic *junь̀cь (“youth”). It is possible for the accent to shift from the second to the first syllable, for reasons unexplained.

Cognate with Russian юне́ц (junéc).

Usage notes

Sources disagree on which syllable should be stressed: Rečnik na bǎlgarskija ezik maintains it be the first, whereas Bǎlgarski tǎlkoven rečnik posits the second, which also appears to accord with the Proto-Slavic etymon *junь̀cь.
