Russian

Etymology

A connection with Latvian jùmts (roof), jùmt (to thatch) is one possibility. This etymology conflicts with the doctrine that *jaN became * in Proto-Slavic.

ESSJa recontructs *jutiti sę instead, allegedly from Proto-Indo-European *yewH- (to blend, mix) with a t-extension.

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): [jʉˈtʲit͡sːə]
  • Audio:(file)

Verb

юти́ться (jutítʹsjaimpf
