From Old East Slavic ѩчьнѣнъ (jęčĭněnŭ), Old Church Slavonic ѩчьмы (jęčĭmy), from Proto-Slavic *(j)ęčьmy.

Cognate with Russian ячме́нь (jačménʹ).
