Etymology
ёб (fuck) + твою́ (your) + мать (mother). In its original meaning the expression was associated with the pagan cult of the Earth where the object of the mother originally belonged to the Mother Earth. That is to say it was rather a curse, imprecation, than an insult, directed not only (or not so much) at the interlocutor's mother as at the mother of the one who curses.
