Etymology[edit]

From ње̏г-, the genitive singular of the first-person pronoun о̑н, +‎ -ов, a suffix forming possessive adjectives. Used since the 13th century, replacing the postpositive genitive of the personal pronoun јего. Akin to Slovene njegôv and Bulgarian не́гов (négov).
