Suffix

[edit]

-ов (-ov)

  1. appended to nouns to form adjectives; -y
  2. (highly productive) forms possessive adjectives; -'s
    Synonym: -ин (-in)
  3. (rare) male equivalent of -ова (-ova): forms male surnames/honorifics (usually) when the first name is omitted
    Джуджар (Džudžar) + ‎-ов (-ov) → ‎Джуджаров (Džudžarov)
    Кочиш (Kočiš) + ‎-ов (-ov) → ‎Кочишов (Kočišov)

  4. (in the plural) forms plural forms of male surnames

Usage notes

[edit]
  • Only -ови (-ovi) is used to form adjectives denoting colour.
  • Unlike Serbo-Croatian, as concerns forming possessive adjectives, this is the preferred suffix, even for most feminine nouns (which use -ин / -in in Serbo-Croatian); compare задруґов (zadrugov) with Serbo-Croatian задругин / zadrugin. This suffix is so productive, that it in fact displaces some Old Slovak forms in -in, such as мамков (mamkov) displacing Old Slovak mamkin.
  • See usage notes of Сабадош (Sabadoš) for use in forming plural forms of male surnames.
