[edit]From Proto-Turkic *qaršu (“opposite”) (compare Old Turkic [script needed] (qaršu), Old Turkic [script needed] (qaršï, “opposite”)), from Proto-Turkic *kar- (“opposite; be opposite, meet”).
Cognate with Kazakh қарсы (qarsy), Kyrgyz каршы (karşı), Uzbek qarshi, Uyghur قارشى (qarshi), Azerbaijani qarşı, Turkish karşı (“opposite, against”).
