From Proto-Turkic *kuńāĺ (the sun, solar heat).

Cognate with Old Uyghur [script needed] (qujaš, solar heat);[1] Tatar кояш (qoyaş, the sun), Nogai кыяс (kıyas), Karakalpak quyas, Uzbek quyosh, Shor қуяш (quyaš), Karaim къуяш (quyaš), Northern Altai куяш (kuyaš), Uzbek quyosh (the sun), Yakut куйаас (kuyaas, heat).
