From Proto-Turkic *ögret- (to familiarize; to teach).

Cognate with Kazakh үйрету (üiretu), Kyrgyz үйрөтүү (üyrötüü), Uzbek oʻrgatmoq, Turkmen öwretmek, Turkish öğretmek, Tuvan өөредир (ööredir), Yakut үөрэт (üöret, to teach, train), etc.
