Declension[edit]

Old Armenian[edit]

Etymology[edit]

The origin is uncertain. Perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *sm̥- and *dóru ‎(tree), assuming contamination with ծառ ‎(caṙ). Alternatively, connected with Proto-Indo-European *H(o)nd-r- ‎(rock; mountain) with a semantic shift “mountain” > “forest”; compare Middle Irish ond ‎(stone, rock, mountain), Sanskrit अद्रि ‎(ádri, stone, rock; mountain).
