Etymology 2
A dialectal word which has been adopted in the literary language as the standard designation for "hornbeam". Unattested in Old or Middle Armenian. Confined to northern, northeastern and eastern peripheral dialects, which corresponds to the geographical range of the hornbeam (see the maps). Note that the by-form *բուքի (*bukʻi) reconstructed by Martirosyan on the basis of rural Karabakh պո̈ւ՛քի (pǘkʻi) found in Ačaṙean 1913 is misguided; the latter does not mean "hornbeam" but is rather a by-form of բոխի (boxi, “horse fennel”)[1][2].
Attempts to derive from Proto-Indo-European *bʰeh₂ǵos (“beech”) are unconvincing, because the expected form is **բած (**bac).
Probably from Old Armenian բող (boł, “*sprout, plant; a kind of plant”) with the botanical suffix -ի (-i), and therefore etymologically identical with homonymous բոխի (boxi, “horse fennel”). Note especially Moks dialect պօ̈ղ (pöġ) glossed as "hornbeam" in Orbeli 2002,[3] if the gloss is not a result of confusion. Note also Karabakh dialect բոխ (box, “tree shoot with buds used as animal feed”),[4] in dialectological notation պօ̈խ (pöx),[5] from the same source. The "hornbeam" may have been viewed as a "source of twigs or tree shoots". Aliroev relates that Chechens made arrows from light and firm young shoots of the hornbeam, hence the name of the arrow in Chechen is identical with that of "hornbeam" — пха (pxa); Chechens also make baskets and wattling out of hornbeam twigs.[6] Ossetian фатхъӕд (fatqæd, “hornbeam”) literally means "arrow-wood" for the same reason.[7] Hornbeam produces shoots abundantly; the shoots and leaves are used as animal fodder.[8]
