Old Armenian[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From earlier *գարեզման (*garezman) from Iranian *garezmān. Compare Persian گرزمان (garazmān, the highest heaven) and Avestan [script needed] (garō nmāna-, literally house of praise), denoting the abode of Ahura Mazda and his blessed angels in the Zoroastrian religion. The grave was viewed as a threshold to heaven.
