Old Armenian[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From earlier *գարեզման (*garezman) from Iranian *garezmān. Compare Persian گرزمان (garazmān, the highest heaven) and Avestan 𐬔𐬀𐬭𐬋 𐬥𐬨𐬁𐬥𐬀 (garō nmāna, house of praise), denoting the abode of Ahura Mazda and his blessed angels in the Zoroastrian religion. The grave was viewed as a threshold to heaven.
