Etymology

The origin is uncertain.[1] According to J̌ahukyan, perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *wih₁-ǵ-, from *weyh₁- (to go straight, take direction; way, row), whence Sanskrit वीत (vītá, line, row), वीथि (vīthi, row, line; road, way) and Latin via (road).[2]
