Old Armenian[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Usually considered an inner-Armenian formation as գով ‎(gov) +‎ ասեմ ‎(asem) +‎ -ան ‎(-an), but Asatryan argues for a possibility of borrowing from early Parthian *gōβ(a)sān ‎(praise-sayer, panegyrist), on which see gwsʾn. See also վիպասան ‎(vipasan).
