Old Armenian[edit]

Etymology[edit]

The origin is uncertain.[1]

According to J̌ahukyan, perhaps inherited from Proto-Indo-European *gʰōdʰ-to-, from the root *gʰedʰ- (to unite, be associated, suit), whence Proto-Germanic *gōdaz (good), Old Church Slavonic ѹгодити (ugoditi, to please, be pleasing), Russian вы́года (výgoda, profit), etc. He remarks that inheritance from Proto-Indo-European *gʰow-to-, from the root *gʰow- (to notice, pay attention to), whence Latin faveo (to favour), Old Norse (to heed, mark), is less likely.[2]

Olsen derives from Proto-Indo-European *woHto-.[3]
