Etymology

Since Müller considered a reduplicated formation inherited from Proto-Indo-European *tap- (to dip), with Proto-Slavic *topìti (to drown) and Old Armenian թօն (tʻōn, rain, shower) as cognates. On the other hand, Petersson derives all of these from Proto-Indo-European *teh₂- (to melt; to flow, stream) extended with *-p-.
