Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Indo-European *plā- (to strike, beat; to beat one's breast; to cry, weep). Cognates include Ancient Greek πλάζω (plázō), πλήσσω (plḗssō, to strike), Latin plango (strike, beat; bewail; lament for, mourn), Old High German fluohhon (German fluchen), Lithuanian plakti (to strike) and Russian плакать (plakatʹ).
