From Proto-Indo-European *pləteno-, from *plāt-, from *pelh₂-. Cognate with Sanskrit प्रथस् (prathas), Ancient Greek πλάτος (plátos), πλατύς (platús), Lithuanian platus, Proto-Celtic *ɸlitanos.
