Etymology

[edit]

Uncertain.[1][2] Since Hübschmann often considered a cognate of Proto-Germanic *narwaz (narrow) and derived from Proto-Indo-European *(s)ner- (to turn, bend, twist, constrict);[3][4][5][6] however, the ղ (ł) instead of ր (r) from *r is unusual (but compare աստղ (astł), եղբայր (ełbayr)). Therefore, some posit a derivative Proto-Indo-European *(s)ner-lo- to explain the Armenian,[7][8][9] but the loss of *r in that position does not seem to be corroborated by other examples.
