Old Armenian[edit]

Etymology[edit]

According to Ačaṙyan, perhaps a “Caucasian” borrowing (Kartvelian? Northeast Caucasian?); compare Georgian ხაზი ‎(xazi, line, row), Laz ხაზ ‎(xaz, to draw a line), Udi խազ ‎(xaz, line).

Alternatively, according to Martirosyan, perhaps an Iranian borrowing, ultimately going back to Proto-Iranian *xad-s-, sigmatic aorist of *xad- ‎(to beat, inflict a wound); compare Manichaean Parthian xʾz- ‎(*xāz-, to devour), Sanskrit खिदति ‎(khinati, to tear; to press down).

Noun[edit]

  1. line, writing mark, line in hand, scratch; notch of an arrow
