Old Armenian
[edit]Etymology
[edit]A Hurro-Urartian borrowing:[1][2][3] compare Urartian 𒄩𒇻𒇷 (ḫa-lu-li /ḫaluli/, “grape?, vine?”),[4][5][6][7] Hurrian 𒄑𒄩𒇻𒇷 (GIŠḫaluli, “grape”).[4][8] In their turn, these may be borrowed from Semitic.[9] Coptic ⲁⲗⲟⲗⲓ (aloli, “grape”) (from Egyptian jꜣrrt) and Ancient Greek χάλις (khális, “unmixed wine”) have also been compared.[10][11] Note especially the Late Egyptian pronunciation /ʔaˈla(ʔ)lə/ of jꜣrrt.
