Old Armenian

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

The root is խեթ- (xetʻ-), according to Ačaṙean, J̌ahukyan and Martirosyan, an ablaut grade of խայթ (xaytʻ) and thus from Proto-Indo-European *kh₂eyd-. The form խեթկեմ (xetʻkem) also belongs here.

On the other hand, Vogt derives խեթկեմ (xetʻkem) from Old Georgian ხეთქა (xetka). However, Ačaṙean considers the latter itself an Armenian borrowing.
