Etymology[edit]

Grown from *ծաղ- ‎(*cał-), from Proto-Indo-European *ǵélh₂-, *ǵlh₂-, whence also ծիծաղ ‎(cicał). Cognate with Ancient Greek γελάω ‎(geláō, to laugh), γέλως ‎(gélōs, laughter), γαλήνη ‎(galḗnē, calm at sea), γαληνός ‎(galēnós, calm).
