Etymology

From Proto-Indo-European *gʷow-yo- or *gʷh₃ew-yo- (adjective), from *gʷṓws (“cow”). Cognate with Sanskrit गव्य (gavya, “coming from or belonging to a cow; milk”), Avestan 𐬔𐬀𐬊𐬌𐬌𐬀 (gaoiia, “coming from cattle, consisting of cattle”), Ancient Greek ἐννεά-βοιος (enneá-boios, “worth nine oxen”).
