From Proto-Indo-European *h₂en- ‎(old woman, ancestor). Cognates include Latin anus, Ancient Greek ἀννίς ‎(annís), Lithuanian anyta, Hittite [script needed] ‎(ḫanna-, grandmother). The by-form հանի ‎(hani) may derive from Proto-Indo-European *h₂en-iH-.

The word must have also had the meaning of “male ancestor” in Proto-Armenian: compare the Georgian borrowing ჰანი ‎(hani, male or female ancestor).
