The origin in uncertain.[1][2] Has been compared to Avestan 𐬞𐬆𐬭𐬆𐬚𐬎 (pərəθu), Sanskrit पृथु (pṛthú, broad)[3][4][5][6] and also to Georgian ფართო (parto), Mingrelian ფართე (parte), Laz ფართო (parto, wide),[7][8] which may be Iranian borrowings.[1] Perhaps borrowed from an unidentified Iranian cognate of these words.[9]
