From Proto-Indo-European *sipto-, grown from *seyp-, *seyb- (to pour, rain, sift). Cognates include Ancient Greek τρύγ-οιπος (trúg-oipos, strainingcloth for wine), εἴβω (eíbō, to drop), Old English sipian (English seep).
