The original spelling is հաւտ (hawt), from Proto-Indo-European *peh₂- (to protect) grown with -d-, as in Persian پاده (pâda, flock). Alternatively, connected with հատանեմ (hatanem, to cut) and հօտ (hōt, cut-off branch) with a semantic development ‘to cut, divide’ → ‘a division of the flock’ → ‘flock of sheep’.

The original spelling is հաւտ (hawt), perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *h₂dti-, from *h₂edos- (sort of cereal, grain), whence հատ (hat).
