Old Armenian
Etymology
The origin is uncertain.[1]
Attested only in the very late Zakʿaria Sarkawag Kʿanakʿeṙcʿi (17th century). Recorded as Middle Armenian ջիպոտ (ǰipot) (12–13th century) and possibly ճպոտ (čpot),[2] and common in the dialects in the forms ճիպոտ (čipot), ճպոտ (čpot), ճպատ (čpat).
Ačaṙyan connects with Coptic ϣⲃⲱⲧ (šbōt, “rod, staff”), Egyptian šꜣbd (“stick”), remarking that a borrowing from Coptic during the time of the Armenian Kingdom of Cilicia is not impossible, but wonders that the word is now confined almost solely to the Eastern dialects.[3] He also adduces the Semitic cognates of the Coptic word: Akkadian 𒉺𒅁𒁉𒂅 (/šabbiṭu/, “staff, sceptre”), Classical Syriac ܫܒܛܐ (šaḇṭā), Hebrew שֵׁבֶט (šḗḇeṭ, “rod, staff”). Modern scholarship derives the Coptic/Egyptian from Semitic.[4] Compare also Siirt North Mesopotamian Arabic [script needed] (šabod).[5]
Similar words are found in Iranian,[6][7] compare Persian چفت (čaft).
