Etymology[edit]

The original spelling is մաւրուք(mawrukʿ), from Proto-Indo-European *smoḱru-, +‎ (-kʿ). Cognate with Sanskrit श्मश्रु(śmáśru, beard), Lithuanian smãkras(chin), Albanian mjekër, Hittite [script needed](zama(n)kur, beard), Irish smech(chin). The Middle Armenian by-form միրուք(mirukʿ) is old and may represent the e-grade *smeḱru-.
