Etymology[edit]

The original spelling is մաւրուք (mawrukʿ), from Proto-Indo-European *smoḱru-, +‎ (-kʿ). Cognate with Sanskrit श्मश्रु (śmáśru, beard), Lithuanian smãkras (chin), Albanian mjekër, Hittite [script needed] (zama(n)kur, beard), Irish smech (chin). The Middle Armenian by-form միրուք (mirukʿ) is old and may represent the e-grade *smeḱru-.
