Etymology

The literary form նապաստակ (napastak) is borrowed from Old Armenian նապաստակ (napastak).

Most of the dialectal forms are inherited from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Old Armenian *նապարստակ (*naparstak), in some cases via (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Middle Armenian լապաստակ (lapastak) and its parallel forms.

Etymology

Ačaṙyan reconstructs the older form of the word as *նապարստակ (*naparstak), from which he explains the Middle Armenian and dialectal forms in լ- (l-) as a dissimilation of ն... ր... (n... r...) to լ... ր... (l... r...). The -ր- (-r-) was lost before a sibilant but survived in dialects thanks to a metathesis. Because լ- (l-) is not old Ačaṙyan rejects the attempts to connect with Latin lepus and leaves the origin open. Olsen remarks that the word has an appearance of an (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Lua error in Module:parameters at line 290: Parameter 1 should be a valid language or etymology language code; the value "ira" is not valid. See WT:LOL and WT:LOL/E. loan (compare the ending -ակ (-ak)) but the exact source has not been definitely established.
