Etymology[edit]

From *նաւաստ(*nawast, navigation) +‎ (-i), from Middle Iranian *nāvvast, from Iranian *nāv-(ship) + *vasti-/*vasta-(driving, leading), from *vad-(to lead). The first is cognate with նաւ(naw), the second part is related to վարեմ(varem).
