Etymology[edit]

From Middle Iranian *šapīk. Compare Middle Persian špyk' ‎(*šabīg, undershirt), Persian شبی ‎(šabī, nightly; nightshirt). These derive from the word for “night”; see Persian شب ‎(šab, night). Thus, the word originally meant “nightshirt”.
