From Middle Iranian *šapīk. Compare Middle Persian špyk' (*šabīg, undershirt), Persian شبی (šabī, nightly; nightshirt). These derive from the word for “night”; see Persian شب (šab, night). Thus, the word originally meant “nightshirt”.
