Old Armenian[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From *պարշտեմ ‎(*parštem), from *պարիշտեմ ‎(*parištem), from *պարիշտ ‎(*parišt), from Parthian *parišt-, from Iranian *pari-štā- ‎(literally standing around). Compare Middle Persian plst- ‎(parist-), plstytn' ‎(paristīdan, to serve; to minister in a ritual; to worship), Persian پرست ‎(parast-), پرستیدن ‎(parastidan, to worship). The earlier form *պարիշտ ‎(*parišt) survives in compounds: բարեպարիշտ ‎(bareparišt), կռապարիշտ ‎(kṙaparišt), ամբարիշտ ‎(ambarišt), etc. See also պաշտօն ‎(paštōn).
