From the figurative use of պարտիմ ‎(partim, I owe).

Verb[edit]

պարտեմ ‎(partem)  (aorist indicative պարտեցի)

  1. (transitive) to worst, to overcome, to vanquish, to conquer, to subjugate, to subdue
    պարտել զչարչարանս‎ ― partel zčʿarčʿarans ― to suffer with fortitude, to bear up against pain or torments
  2. (in the mediopassive, intransitive) to be conquered, to have the worst of it
    յապշութիւն պարտել‎ ― yapšutʿiwn partel ― to be confounded, astounded, astonished, surprised
    պարտեցաւ պատերազմն‎ ― partecʿaw paterazmn ― a part was subdued
