Old Armenian[edit]

Etymology[edit]

According to Ačaṙyan, from earlier *սինամարգ ‎(*sinamarg) (note the dialectal forms of սիրամարգ ‎(siramarg)), an Iranian borrowing. Compare Middle Persian synmwlw ‎(Sēnmurw), Persian سیمرغ ‎(Simorğ), Avestan 𐬨𐬆𐬭𐬆𐬖𐬋⸱𐬯𐬀𐬉𐬥𐬋 ‎(mərəγō saēnō, the bird Saēna).

J̌ahukyan notes, that the word was reshaped in Armenian by folk etymology under the influence of սիր- ‎(sir-, love).
