Etymology[edit]

From սուղ (suł, short) +‎ -ոց (-ocʻ, tool suffix), i.e. "shortening tool".[1][2] The marine animal sense encountered only in the Physiologus is a semantic loan from Ancient Greek πρίων (príōn).
