Old Armenian[edit]

Etymology[edit]

As is already suggested by Nor baṙgirkʿ haykazean lezui, composed of վիզ ‎(viz, neck) +‎ -ան ‎(-an). Accepted by J̌ahukyan. For the semantics compare the Old Armenian expression վիզ ամբառնալ ‎(viz ambaṙnal, to become rebellious, proud, insubordinate), ընդվզիմ ‎(əndvzim), English stiff-necked, Russian жестоковыйный ‎(žestokovyjnyj). Ačaṙyan unnecessarily rejects this etymology and leaves the origin of the word open.

Adjective[edit]

վզան ‎(vzan)

  1. haughty, uncontrolled, stiff-necked
