From քերեմ ‎(kʿerem, scratch, scrape; write, inscribe) +‎ -ական ‎(-akan). The sense of "grammarian" is a calque from Ancient Greek, where γραμματικός ‎(grammatikós) is from γράφω ‎(gráphō, to scratch; to scratch out letters; to write).
