Etymology[edit]

From הַקַּש ‎(hakásh, the straw) + שֶׁ־ ‎(she-, that) + שָּׁבַר ‎(shavár, broke) + אֶת ‎(ét, [direct object marker]) + גַּב־ ‎(gáv-, back of) + הַגָּמָל ‎(hagamál, the camel), hence literally “the straw that broke the camel’s back”; a calque from English.
