Etymology[edit]
From הַקַּשׁ (hakásh, “the straw”) + שֶׁ־ (she-, “that”) + שָּׁבַר (shavár, “broke”) + אֶת (ét, “[direct object marker]”) + גַּב־ (gáv-, “back of”) + הַגָּמָל (hagamál, “the camel”), hence literally “the straw that broke the camel’s back”; a calque from English.
