Etymology

Disputed. Possibly of ultimate origin ירו (yarú, he lays down) +‎ שלם (Shalém, the Canaanite god Shalem). Popular folk-etymology יראה (yir'éh, he sees) +‎ שלום (shalóm, peace). Akin to Akkadian 𒌑𒊒𒊓𒅆 (úrusalim) and Classical Syriac ܐܘܪܫܠܡ (ʾŪrišlēm). Word-end pronunciation of -áyim most likely a post-Biblical development.
