Etymology[edit]

Disputed. Possibly of ultimate origin ירו(yarú, he lays down) +‎ שלם(Shalém, the Canaanite god Shalem). Popular folk-etymology יראה(yir'éh, he sees) +‎ שלום(shalóm, peace). Akin to Akkadian 𒌑𒊒𒊓𒅆 (úrusalim) and Classical Syriac ܐܘܪܫܠܡ(ʾŪrišlēm). Word-end pronunciation of -áyim most likely a post-Biblical development.
