From a Proto-Semitic root, cognate with Arabic كَفَّرَ (kaffara, to cover, expiate, forgive).

כיפר / כִּפֵּר (kipér) third-singular masculine past (pi'el construction, future יְכַפֵּר, passive counterpart כופר / כֻּפַּר)
