     אֵיכָ֤ה תֹֽאמְרוּ֙ חֲכָמִ֣ים אֲנַ֔חְנוּ וְתוֹרַ֥ת יְהוָ֖ה אִתָּ֑נוּ אָכֵן֙ הִנֵּ֣ה לַשֶּׁ֣קֶר עָשָׂ֔ה עֵ֖ט שֶׁ֥קֶר סֹפְרִֽים׃

     Eikhá tomrú: ḥakhamím anáḥnu v-torát Adonái itánu? Akhén hinéh la-shéqer asá et, shéqer sofrím.

     How do ye say: ‘We are wise, and the Law of the Lord is with us’? Lo, certainly in vain hath wrought the vain pen of the scribes.

     Amrú aláv al Rabbán Yoḥanán ben Zakái she-lo hiníaḥ miqrá u-mishná, g'mará, halakhót v-agadót, diqduqéi Toráh v-diqduqéi sofrím, qalím va-ḥamorím u-gzerót shavót, t'qufót v-gemaṭriya'ót, siḥát mal'akhei ha-sharet v-siḥat shedim v-siḥat d'qalím, mashlót kuvsín, mashlót shu'alím, davár gadól, davár qaṭán.

     They said of Rabban Yochanan son of Zakkai that he did not neglect Bible, Mishnah, Gemara, legal works and folktales, minutiae of the Torah, minutiae of the scribes, a fortiori inferences and verbal analogies, seasons, numerology, the conversation of the ministering angels, and the conversation of demons and the conversation of palm trees, parables of launderers, parables of foxes, great things or small things.
