Etymology

From Old High German [Term?] antwurten (to answer), derived from the noun antwurti (whence Yiddish ענטפֿער (entfer, answer)), itself from wort (whence Yiddish וואָרט (vort, word)). Compare German Antwort, Dutch antwoord. English answer is a similar formation, but not directly related.
