From Proto-Semitic *ṯ̣amiʔ- (to thirst). Compare Arabic ظَمِئَ (ẓamiʔa, to thirst; to long).

Verb

צָמֵא (tsamé) (pa'al construction)

  1. to thirst, be thirsty
    • Tanach, Exodus 17:3, with translation of the Jewish Publication Society:
But the people thirsted there for water; and the people grumbled against Moses and said, “Why did you bring us up from Egypt, to kill us and our children and livestock with thirst?”
  2. (figuratively) to long, yearn
