From Middle High German kennen, a conflation of Old High German kennan (to know) and kunnan (to be able to), from Proto-West Germanic *kannijan (to make known) and *kunnan (to know).

Compare German kennen (to know) and können (to be able to). Cognate to English ken and can, and more distantly know.
