Inherited from Sanskrit आर्द्रक (ārdraka), through Prakrit *𑀆𑀤𑁆𑀤𑀅 (*āddaa), from आर्द्र (ārdra, wet), as fresh ginger is wet. Doublet of اَدْرَک (adrak). Cognates include Bengali আদা (ada), Gujarati આદુ (ādu), Nepali अदुवा (aduwā).
