Borrowed from Arabic الْإِسْكَنْدَرُون (al-ʔiskandarūn), ultimately from Ancient Greek Ἀλεξάνδρεια (Alexándreia, Alexandria), from Ἀλέξανδρος (Aléxandros, Alexander) + -εια (-eia, -ia: forming place names) in reference to Alexander the Great of Macedonia. Doublet of اسكندریه.
